Following his visit to The Gambia, Co-Chairman Graham Watson travelled to neighbouring Senegal to evaluate whether Medi Tech Trust would be able to be of assistance.
He learned that many people suffered from kidney stone problems and that those who were fortunate to be operated upon, did not experience the more modern PCNL techniques.
After training some surgical staff at Dakar Hospital during that visit, he agreed to return to perform more PCNL operations. Over the years, significant progress has been made by the local urology surgeons, led by Professor Lamine Niang, so they are now less dependent on our charity’s support.
In 2016, a shipment of 330 boxes of PPE equipment – gloves, gowns , masks and drapes – were shipped to Dakar’s main hospital “Hôpital de General Grand Yoff”. Three years later, a further shipment of over 7,000 items of medical equipment and surgical supplies was sent to “HOGGY” by sea container.
With the onset of Covid-19 planned training visits had to be suspended. To ensure continuity, virtual telementoring training will be provided during 2021.
