Community Initiative for East Sussex Surgeries
More minor surgical procedures are now being carried out at surgery level to save patients being referred to hospital. Our Community Initiatives are specifically aimed at benefitting patients. A geographical area is selected for each Initiative, then surgeries are invited to submit a ‘Wish List’ of medical equipment items that would be of great benefit to their patients or would assist their surgery staff to improve the procedures they provide, or could provide, for their patients.
The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Andrew Blackman, was the Guest of Honour at the Presentation Evening held at Uckfield Civic Centre on 13 July 2023, where he presented representatives from each surgery with a Certificate of the equipment they were receiving. The Mayor of Uckfield, Councillor Jackie Love and the Mayor of Hailsham, Mr Paul Holbrook with his wife, also attended.

Worth nearly £100,000, 150 items of medical equipment potentially benefitting over 170,000 patients were donated to 27 doctors’ surgeries based in Newhaven, Seaford, Hailsham, Uckfield, Crowborough and rural Sussex. This was our fourth Community Initiative for East Sussex surgeries. Over 500 items have so far been donated, enabling 79% of East Sussex’s patient population to benefit.
A fifth Initiative is being planned for 2024 to provide for the remaining 21%.

Some Current Initiatives
Malawi August 2023:
As part of MTT’s aim to support overseas hospitals and surgical staff, a 20 foot sea container full of donated equipment and consumables is en route to the Kamuzu Central Hospital. Contents include a video stack, examination couches, stretcher trolleys, saline system, tables, etc. along with thousands of consumables.
July 2023: Ukraine
Having been offered a donation of a large quantity of surgical gowns, gloves and sanitizers, these were donated to Ukrainian hospitals where they were urgently needed.

Responding to an urgent appeal for medical equipment and consumables, our volunteers packed scores of boxes packed with medical supplies.

April 2023: South Africa & Malawi
Co-Chair Graham Watson, accompanied by Asst Prof. Kymora Scotland from San Diego, visited Cape Town where they assisted in a week’s intensive workshop and training programme. The following week was spent performing many operations and training staff at the Kamuzu Central Hospital, Lilongwe.

Pre-used Lumenis VersaPulse Holmium model purchased. It will be put to good and constant use in an African hospital.
