We send UK and international specialists to work alongside local clinicians overseas — sharing surgical and anaesthetic skills that stay in the hospital long after the course ends.
Sharing skills that multiply their impact
Alongside donating equipment, Medi Tech Trust arranges specialist surgical and anaesthetic training courses in low- and middle-income countries. UK and international consultants travel to partner hospitals to teach hands-on technique, often pairing the visit with a donation of the equipment needed to put the new skills into practice.
Because our courses train local clinicians directly, the benefit doesn’t end when our volunteers fly home — it is passed on to colleagues and future patients for years to come. The coming year looks busy for our charity, with four training visits already planned across Tanzania, Senegal, Malawi and Sri Lanka.
Anaesthesia & critical illness training
MTT works with the Tanzania Association of Non-Physician Anaesthetists and Burundi Parables Christian Ministries to improve the quality and safety of anaesthesia and critical illness management.
The executive team and nurse anaesthetists at TPC Hospital, Rural Moshi, have expressed deep gratitude to MTT for funding a modern anaesthesia machine.
PCNL workshop, Idrissa Pouye Hospital
In February 2026, Miss Danielle Whiting, Consultant Urologist at Frimley Park Hospital, UK, and Professor Yi Zhang travelled to Idrissa Pouye Hospital, Dakar, to deliver a percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) workshop.
The unit was also gifted a suction machine to support the introduction of suction ureteric access sheaths.
Mentorship at Kamuzu Central Hospital
MTT is working in partnership with Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), Lilongwe, to improve urogynaecological care through a package of training with ongoing support and mentorship — aiming for sustained changes in clinical practice rather than a one-off visit.
This long-term approach means each visit builds on the last, deepening the relationship with KCH’s clinical teams and embedding new techniques into everyday practice.
PCNL course & UK trainee subsidy
Our next PCNL course in Sri Lanka runs in November 2026. Mr Simon Mackie, who has succeeded Graham Watson OBE as course faculty lead, has also been invited to address the Sri Lanka Association of Urological Surgeons at their annual conference.
The course is also open to UK trainees, who — alongside hands-on experience — receive a substantial subsidy from our charity to take part.
Global projects
One of the main aims of Medi Tech Trust is to help alleviate pain and suffering for those who need medical help. As well as providing urgently needed medical equipment to UK hospitals, we have been concentrating our efforts in Africa by organising visits to train surgeons in minimal invasive procedures, particularly in the field of Urology. In addition, we send supplies so that many more people can be operated upon.
Through ‘Skills Transfer Visits’ the local health system is strengthened.
Two long-term Training Projects are:
Malawi & Tanzania
Promote female health care, especially urinary incontinence.
Send Medical Equipment to assess urinary incontinence in patients.
Provide funds to support the training of Urological and Gynaecological surgeons.
Tanzania
Annual Maternal Deaths per 100,000 are over 500 (in the UK they are 7).
Train non-physician anaesthetists.
Reduce deaths due to surgery and Anaesthesia.
Promote safe care for patients.
